Chapter 2

Over the next week, life was pretty much normal. I went to class, studied, wrote a couple papers, and talked to Steve at least once a day. The only aspect that was different was the fact that I still hadn’t started. Though it was in the back of my mind that there might be a problem, I brushed it off, attributing it to stress. Despite being on the pill for several years, for health reasons, there had been times where I’d been a few days to a week late due to stress.

However, by Saturday, I could no longer push it away. Around eight that morning, I woke to an overwhelming sense of nausea. I just laid there hoping that if I stayed still it would pass. Unfortunately, within seconds, I realized it wasn’t going to and I got out of bed and into my chair as quickly as I could.

After getting sick and cleaning the basin, I just put my elbows on the sink, laid my head in my palms, and closed my eyes for several minutes. I washed my hands and face and used mouthwash. After drying my face and looking at myself in the mirror, I went back to bed and slept.

When I woke up again, it was 10:30. As I laid there, I didn’t feel nauseous anymore, so I decided to go try and eat something. Before heading to the dining room, I went to the bathroom. Seeing that I still wasn’t bleeding, I closed my eyes and sighed.

Making my way to the dining room, I saw Lillian and Tia sitting at the first table to my left, talking. After ordering two pieces of toast, I pulled up between them.

“Hey,” they both greeted me.

“Hey,” I replied weakly, put my elbow on the table, and leaned into it.

“You okay?” Lillian asked.

“No, not really.”

“What’s wrong?” Tia asked.

Before I could answer, Quentin said, “Lillian, order’s ready.”

Tia got up.

“Hey, do you mind getting me something to drink, too?”

“Yeah, sure. Coffee, right?”

“Actually, I just want some Sprite, no ice.”

“Okay.”

After setting Lillian’s food down, she set my Sprite in front of me.

“Thanks,” I said, with a weak smile.

“You’re welcome.”

When she finished cutting up Lillian’s food, she sat back down.

“So, what’s wrong?” she asked.

For a long moment I didn’t say anything and just drank my Sprite.

“I’m late,” I finally answered, quietly.

“Oh,” both she and Lillian responded, almost as quietly.

Unsure of what to say next, we all sat there, silently, for the next several minutes.

Finally, Quentin called, “Beth. Order’s ready.”

Tia got up.

“Thanks,” I said, when she came back, and she started taking the crust off my toast and folded it.

“You’re welcome.”

“So, how late are you?” Lillian asked.

“A week, give or take a day or two,” I replied, eating a bite of toast.

“Oh.”

“So, what are you going to do?” Tia asked.

“I don’t know. I guess get a pregnancy test to make sure.”

“Yeah, that’s probably a good idea.”

“It could be just stress. I know that happens to me sometimes,” Lillian pointed out, trying to give me some hope.
